After the release of her last album over 4 years ago, Dana International seemed to have disappeared. But actually she has been busy all these years and now she even returns with a new album!
At the end of the year 2002 Dana International released her last album. The Mesika’s weren’t in the business and A Star Is Born was just a name of a recording studio in Tel-Aviv. Since then, more than 4 years have passed, Dana International hasn’t sent anything new to the radio stations and the only drama she participated on was at the 50th year celebration of the Eurovision Song Contest with Diva. Beside that she has been making money by performing in front of her loyal audiences in Israel and around the world. But also Dana knows that only Shlomo Artzi can sell plenty of tickets to his shows after 5 years without an album. Now she’s coming with a new single: Everything Is For The Better (written by Ilan Shapler and composed by Ziv Goland) and the song already seems to become a pop playlist hit.
Q: Welcome back A: I’ve heard people talking about my absence for more than 4 years, but for me its actually weird cause I was pretty busy during this time. I kept on working, performing and traveling abroad. I think of myself that I’m famous enough not to run to the TV stations every 3 months to promote myself. I know that in this business, if you don’t release new singles you just don’t exist, but I use the success of the songs I performed with and since 14 years back.
It’s the first time in her career that songs she has written will appear on her album. This album will include 2 songs Dana has written. Many writers and artists like to be very complicated and not clear when they are asked about their songs, but Dana has clear insights on them.
Dana tells: “The first song is very personal, I talk about my experiences I have had during the years and all that’s happened to me. The sad and melancholic things. Once I was over 35 years old I started looking in a different way at my birthdays. The second song talks about something very brave and bold for me, it’s the need of me as a women to pamper myself every 2 weeks with youngsters that know how to make you feel good, and enjoy the life not only through a steady relationship. I really recommend everyone to order escort services at least once every 2 weeks”.
Q: Interesting, maybe you also have ideas on adopting a kid? It’s a trend among celebrities nowadays. A: I don’t know, who will allow me? Come on! I don’t have the energy to go through all the procedures and committees and then be refused, maybe I am not suitable for kids and because of that I am what I have become and turned into. GOD probably kept me away from kids.
Q: Your returning to a music market that’s totally different than the one you left over 4 years ago. A: There is something in what your saying, if you’ll check you’ll see that so far those Rimon artists have succeeded very well so far, no doubt they have done something well that you can’t argue with. To There the song of Miri Mesika, is a perfect song in terms of production, text, music and the way its performed. Its really rare that you perform at that level and it doesn’t matter from where you come, if its from Rimon or from Shekunat HaTikvah.
Q: So who do you like in the Israeli music scene nowadays? A: Really like? Honestly no one, I wont lie I am really connected to things that are going on in the world, but to buy an album of an Israeli artist, no way. That hasn’t happened to me for a very long time, I don’t know why, but no Israeli singer has taken out any decent albums. I don’t know, maybe in my sub consciousness I am a bit jealous of other singers maybe it’s the competition. I watch lots of MTV and like to remain updated. But I can tell you whom I don’t like at all and cant stand: Roni Superstar, I just can’t hear it! She gives me a shudder, puts me in a shock, she’s the only one from all the Israeli gals that does this to me.
Q: What should we expect from your new album? A: I worked on it with Eli Abramov from the Click that was born into the alternative music world and stayed that way till now. He was the most progressive in the 80’s and has the most progressive sound now in 2007. On this album the music of the songs will be more tight and composed. I also think it’s more mature, but listen its another album in the line of making and surely not the album of my life. For me to connect the word Life with the album is really not serious, maybe if I would adopt a child that would be the biggest move in my life, but surely not an album.
Q: As an Eurovision expert what do you think of Teapacks? A: I am crazy about them! Kobi Oz is bigger than life, but the song they have chosen I am really sorry to say, I don’t like. Not because I am a professor of Eurovision, just don’t like the song, but no one really knows what can really win a Eurovision contest, there aren’t many rules about it and lots of luck is involved too. Personally I wouldn’t choose this song to go with, but I trust them, there are surprises and they can also succeed, we have to give them credit.
The ones that got to watch Dana in the recent years in action were the viewers of the forth season of the soap: Our Song, she played the role of GOD in the series. Dana says: “To take me and let me play as GOD was their brilliant move, actually it wasn’t easy for me at all over there, to work and shoot from 5 in the morning till the evening is really not for me, and they deserve credit for doing so”.
Q: Your role in Our Song means that you’ve become a prime time national figure? A: It’s probably right, but I have read once that there is something dangerous about being a national figure and I agree with it, so I better learn to handle the hug.
