Maya Buskila

Biography

Maya Buskila was born on the 9th of November 1977 in Netanya. Maya Buskila loved to sing as a child. As a teenager she studied at a religious school and although not allowed, she participated in a beauty pageant contest and won one of the prizes, but she was expelled from her school for it.

Her uncle who’s a known singer and a lyric writer, Shimon Buskila, encouraged her to keep on singing. This led Maya eventually to sign a contract with one of the biggest record labels in Israel called Helicon.

Helicon, one of Israels best known music company, heard her singing and signed her on a long term contract, but not much was done to build her up as a singer and produce her an album.

After 4 years with Helicon Maya felt that her career isn’t progressing as she hoped to and left them. Meanwhile she continued to perform and sing in various clubs. Fortunately for her in one of those performances at a Karaoke club in Tel-Aviv, two known managers were sitting in the audience, Roberto Ben-Shushan and Eyal Malul. They were very impressed by her vocal performance and signed her on a contract and became her managers.

As soon as this had happened Maya’s career turned for good, she recorded 2 singles called There’s A Violin In My Heart and A Sold Out Story. Both songs became very successful and it led to her first album in titled A Sold Out Story. This album was released in 2004 and became a huge success. The album also included her biggest hit so far called The Heart. The entire album was written and composed by many of Israeli well known artists like Tzvika Pik, Arkadi Duchin, Idan Raichel, Pablo Rosenberg and Yaron Cohen.

With the success of this album, that became a Gold record in just 3 weeks, she was chosen as the Female Singer Of The Year, The New Artist Of The Year, and even as the artist with the most downloaded ringtones of the year.

In the following year Maya worked on gathering material for her next album. She also participated in a variety of commercials and even acted in a movie that came out in late 2005 called Days Of Love. In the movie Maya portrayed a character of a young female that works as a waitress for her father and dreams of becoming a famous singer. The movie had mild success at the box office.

In 2006 Maya took out her second album called Days Of Love, which was also part of the soundtrack of the movie she acted in with the same title. On this album she sang also in English beside the Hebrew songs. The album had moderate success compared to the previous one, and she felt that her managers Ben-Shushan and Malul aren’t doing enough to promote her career on one hand and on the second hand mostly because of financial disputes, she has left them recently.
