David D'or

Biography

Image David D'Or was born in 1966 in Holon, with the real name David Nehaisi, to a traditional Jewish family. He was exposed to singing from early age, and participated with great interest in the family tradition.

In 1986 D'Or served in the Israeli army, enlisted in a military artistic group called the Israeli Army Central Command Troops Entertainment Group. He worked closely with Israel's most talented musicians and directors and took part in the record Be’sha’arakh Yericho.

fter completing his army service David was invited by the Israeli National Theater Habima to be a part of the cast in various performances, among them Blood Marriage by Lorka, directed by Channan Shir, Cabaret, directed by Jerome Svary; Tartiff, directed by Robert Stroah, music by Gaya Kenchelli and Cry The Beloved Country, music by Kurt Weill. David stayed with the National Theater of Israel for four years.

In 1991, D’Or was accepted into the Jerusalem Academy of Music. He began his musical career as a classical tenor. During his studies, Zubin Mehta, director of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, invited him to be his soloist for a tour of Carmina Burana, which was performed in concert halls all over Israel. David performed again in Carmina Burana with Zubin Mehta and the Israeli Philharmonic in July 2004.

In 1992 David worked with Habima for 4 years, but also saw time to release his self titled debut album. Not forgetting his strong traditions, David has always been drawn to ethnic music, an interest that led him in 1995 to produce his second album together with the group The Natural Choice and Shlomo Bar comprised of ethnic musicians.

That year he also received an invitation from the Vatican to perform for the Pope (David was invited to return to the Vatican in 2003). His concert integrated original ethnic music with European classics. The concert was a huge success and received numerous reviews in many European newspapers and TV interviews.

Following that concert, David has been invited to many performances throughout Italy, appearing on many TV shows such as Mauricio Constenzo, on Channel 1, and Paulo Limiti, on Channel 2. The Italian press, such as Courira de La Sierra and La Republica received David very affectionately, and as a result David is often invited to return to Italy.

David has been since touring also the USA's major cities, such as Washington D.C., Los Angeles, Toledo, New Jersey and Memphis, where he received high praises by the local newspapers.

David tours regularly in Italy, Turkey and Sweden, where he recorded music for a show under the direction of the Swedish National Theater.

In 1997, The Ra'anana Symphony Orchestra commissioned an original work, specially written for David D’Or, called The Children of God. The music is comprised of sentences appearing in the 3 religions, Jewish, Moslem and Christian, emphasizing the message: 'love your neighbor'. The work was composed by the famous Georgian composer, Josef Bardanashvilly, and consequently opened a greatly successful series of concerts of the orchestra in Israel and throughout the US.

In that same year David released his third album together with the singer Etti Ankri called David D’Or & Etti Ankri, which was perhaps his most popular album. In 1999 he released his fourth album In Changing Altitudes (Begovah Mishtan).

In 2001 David was named Israel's Singer of the Year. Also he has been named Best Vocal Performer. Of his five albums, four have become platinum, and one gold. His fifth album called In The Soul (Baneshama) was also released in 2001. Besides these albums, David has released another two albums called David D’Or & The Philharmonic and Ra’anana Symphonette Orchestra.

D'Or represented Israel in the 2004 Eurovision Song Contest in Istanbul with the song To Believe (Le'HaAmin).

His most recent performance was at the concert in Ashdod to celebrate the 50 years of existence of the city in July 2006. Pictures of the concert and his performance can be seen at the Concert Gallery.
